I think IPTC are obsolete.
EXIF is only for JPEGs.
JPEGs also have a single comment field.
PNGs can have several comment fields.

The FreeImage library can handle all that.

Just as a note:
In JPEG the signature is in the Comment field.
In PNG, an iTxt data chunk named Comment is added
(iTxt is like Text but accepts Unicode data).
