For e.g. when we recieve a new email at Hotmail and MSN shows a small window informing us of new email.

is this possible.?

moreover, can you please explain to me the steps required to make a windows application with Delphi etc.

Three months ago someone else requested the same thing. I think it is a good idea, but not for the OSCPMWin application but for a new application. I filled an item in my bugtracker as a new idea. You can check it at:
http://www.mariovaldez.net/webapps/bugtracker/bug.php?op=show&bugid=108

I call it the OSC Windows Monitor. But as I wrote above, it is just an idea, I have not even written the requirements or initial design.

That is a big question. You'll have better luck checking a Delphi tutorial. You may start here:

Done.

I hope to start writting it by January. As soon as I release the first alpha version I'll let you know so you can test it.

I learned directly from the Delphi printed manuals (which are available also as PDFs in the Delphi CDROM).

> How did you start off with this ?

Around 15 years ago I used Borland TurboPascal to develop DOS software. When Windows 3.1 appeared I needed to develop in Windows but I didn't want to use any derivative of Basic (VB appeared around 1991). By those days my only languages were (Quick)Basic, Pascal, Cobol and x86 assembler, none very useful for Windows. So, when Delphi v1 appeared (around 1995) I become its fan. Later I changed to Delphi 4 and lastly to Delphi 6.

For me, learning Delphi was really learning how to think about visual objects (controls) and events, which was not used in TurboPascal. But I skipped all about the Pascal language because I already know it. (By the way, I learned Pascal from a book titled "Turbo Pascal Disktutor" by Werner Feibel).

But as I said above, my main learning books were the Delphi manuals.

If you already have Delphi, check the Documentation directory of the CDROM.

Mmmmh... searching in Google I found this page:
http://www.win.tue.nl/~watson/2IP20/noframes.htm
It seems the three manuals (Quick start, Developer's Guide and Object Pascal Language Guide) can be downloaded from there. If you still don't have Delphi, check them out.

If you don't have Delphi, you can try it if you find where to download the "Personal edition", which was available from Borland for free (it seems now cannot be downloaded from them). It have some limitations but it will help you to learn the language. Search the net for a file named "BorlandDelphiPersonalEdition.exe", a file of around 144 MB (some universities still distribute the file).

> Where can I send a Donation to you ?

Ah, thanks, I really have no way to receive donations right now, but I really appreciate the intention. :)

I searched on google and found this guy.

http://www.matlus.com/scripts/website.dll

Check his project.

By the way, i have Delphi 6. I had bought it but never had the chance to use it.

have you used VB or VB .NET. If yes, did you find any major difference between Delphi and VB.

here is an example to get you an idea of what I asked.

Check this link:
http://www.helpcenterlive.com/winapp.php

These are screenshots which you can see since it is a Windows Application but this one is developed through VB ,not Delphi.

Do I have to learn just Delphi or is there any other language i should learn also. Apart from Pascal.

Do I need ADO, SOAP etc. or will the required application be developed through Delphi only.

I reviewed briefly his website. It seems all the content is managed using Delphi code in a IIS server. Even though I knew it can be done, this is the first time I see and implementation; nice. :)

No, I haven't used Vb or VB.net. I tested briefly VB 6 but nothing serious. I can't help you comparing them (I mean, the only obvious difference at first glance was that one used ObjectPascal and the other a kind of QuickBasic).

Yes, it will be something like that.

If you want to just use Delphi Pascal is enough. ADO will help you if you write database applications to be used with ADO, but Delphi by default uses the BDE. (Personally, I don't like any of them, I write DB apps using third party components [Like ZeosLib used in OSCPMWin]). About SOAP, learning it would be a plus, bit it is like learning TCP/IP, XML or ODBC; they are used but most probably you won't need to know the little details of their inner working to use them.

For example, for the OSC Windows Monitor I plan to use Delphi and PHP in the server side (because I don't want to access the OSCommerce database directly). the Delphi application will request the PHP page and the PHP code will do the SQL queries and then reply to the application. The returned data can be plain text, XML, or any other format. So, developing in Delphi would require only and Indy library component (already included with Delphi 6) and none database component.

Mario A. Valdez-Ramirez.

> any News on OSC Windows Monitor?

Hi again. I have no news for the OSC Windows Monitor. Before writing the first line of code I really need practical ideas about what data would be useful. No analysis, no design, no code.

I have the following ideas:

The monitor should report the following events as soon as they happen:
*Newly created orders.
*Orders changed in status.

The monitor should report the following stats on request:

*Customers:
-Total customers.
-Total registered customers in the last X minutes/hours.

*Products:
-Total products.
-Total products added in the last X minutes/hours.
-Total products updated in the last X minutes/hours.
-Total products with quantities under X.

*Orders:
-Total orders.
-Total orders in X status.
-Total orders in X status created/modified in the last X minutes/hours.
-Total value of orders created in the last X minutes/hours.

*Reviews:
-Total reviews.
-Created in the last X minutes/hours.

*Banners:
-Banners shown in the last X minutes/hours.
-Banners clicked in the last X minutes/hours.

*Visits:
-Total views.
-Total visitors now.

So, may that be useful to most potential users? I know people who run OSCommerce stores, but I don't have my own store (only testing servers), so I'm not sure what data can be more useful to the store operator or the store owner.

Ideas, requests, requirements, wishes... that's what I'm looking for at this stage. :)

Regards,

Mario A. Valdez-Ramirez.

I think the functions you have listed are enough for now.

When will you begin the development ?

I would love it if something could pop up and say "You have a new order." And "You have a visitor." And "You have a visitor that has placed something in their shopping cart."

You know that old cliche about a watched pot never boils. Maybe if I weren't watching so much I'd get more orders, do you think?

I have no idea if this is a lot of work, but I'd be the first to download it!

Hi.

I'm still testing and finishing thet server-side scripting. I have no written the Windows client.

I wish I could say that it will be ready next week, but I cannot be sure, because I've been so short of time these last months.

But I haven't forgotten this project. I'll work to release an alpha prototype by next week.

To anybody interested:

As I have failed to deliver this utility (the osC Win Monitor) I can only suggest you to try another open-source product (just announced a few days ago).

The software is named "Oscommerce order notifier 1.0", written by a person/group named "chrisranjana".

You can download it from http://sourceforge.net/projects/ordernotifier/

I have not tested it.

Regards,

Mario A. Valdez-Ramirez.
